WHAT IS

Occupational Medicine?

Occupational medicine is the field of medicine that deals with the effects of work on health and conversely, how a worker’s health may affect work safety, performance, and attendance.

Occupational medicine is a specialty that combines public health, clinical medicine, and health sciences:  epidemiology, biostatistics, toxicology, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, and safety.

There are a number of strategies to manage health-related risks at the level of the individual worker, the workplace, and the workforce:

Health Risk Management – hazard identification, exposure assessment and control, job design and safe work practices, personal protective equipment, worker education and participation, and risk-based medical fitness assessments

Diagnosis and Treatment – early recognition  and diagnosis of injuries and illness, effective medical treatment, and appropriate work limitations or restrictions

Improving Outcomes – supporting recovery and rehabilitation, return to work and accommodation, workers’ compensation and disability management.

Medical Surveillance

Medical surveillance is the periodic screening for work-related disease in workers who are overexposed to a hazard at work.
To be effective, the early detection of a work-related disease must translate to improved long-term health for workers.

Medical Fitness to Work

Medical fitness to work assessments may be required (by law or policy) of workers in positions that are safety sensitive, remote or offshore, are physically demanding, or are otherwise high risk. All Canadian employers have a duty of care and a duty to accommodate persons with medical disabilities.

Biological Monitoring

Biological (or toxicokinetic) monitoring is the measurement of a chemical or its metabolites in body fluids (exhaled air, blood, urine) in order to assess its absorption by all routes (inhalation, ingestion, dermal) from both occupational and non-occupational sources of exposure.
